Impact of Virtual YMCA

Access to opportunities to participate in organized sports via Club Days, unique experiences including drum fit, pickelball, the YMCA Outdoor Centre (hiking, climbing walls, ropes courses).  Daily nutrition education and snacks, and physical activity using the evidence based CATCH program.

Academic and Literacy support provides children with an opportunity for critical learning.  Literacy is incorporated into all program activities.  Children receive daily homework assistance in small groups (1:5 ratio) ensuring all children receive individual attention.  The small group provides children with opportunities to engage in conversation with peers and adults which supports the development of oral language skills.

Social Development by participating in daily social skills activities that promote the importance of team work, responsibility, and giving resulting in improved self confidence and better self esteem.  Families are able to access community resources and supports reducing stress.  The Virtual Y staff team is engaged in continuous conversation with classroom teachers, educational assistants, special education staff, ESL teachers, the principal and parents to ensure that there is collaboration and a culture of support that provides the children with a continuum of support between the school, Virtual YMCA and home.

Safe Environment enables children to risk trying new things like preparing and eating different foods, participating in new games, sports and activities.
